Educational Programs
One of the Guild's most important functions is to supplement the educational efforts of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in their efforts to enhance the lives of New Mexicans of all ages. We have opportunities to support them in several different ways: The Peter and the Wolf program, the Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Concerto Competition for Piano and Strings, and the Popejoy Youth Concerts.

Peter and the Wolf Each year, more than 6,000 first-grade students from Albuquerque Public Schools and Rio Rancho schools are introduced to instruments of the orchestra via an interactive, curriculum-based presentation of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. The Guild provides worksheets to each participating student that support the schools' curriculum and reinforce the Guild's Peter and the Wolf presentation. Docents from the Guild are specially trained and supplied with materials for the presentation, including a narrative to use as a guide, posters, audio visual equipment, and a recorded version of the story narrated by Leonard Bernstein.
This program won the American League of Orchestras Gold Award for Education. Everyone involved in this program wins! The children gain knowledge and skills, and volunteer docents are rewarded through this unique interaction with the children.
This year, we have the capacity to reach over 8,000 students. The program is offered at no charge to schools. For more information, or to request the presentation for your classroom, email peterandthewolf@newmexicosymphonyguild.org.

Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Concerto Competition for Piano and Strings February 13, 2010
In 1992, the New Mexico Symphony Guild established an annual competition for young musicians in New Mexico. The competition now carries the name of Jackie McGehee, a long-time NMSG member and past president, who spear headed the event and underwrote the program to get it started. It is considered one of the premier competitions in the state. This competition provides monetary awards for the winners, as well as an opportunity to perform with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.
In 2009, the Guild achieved a long-term goal of expanding the competition to include string instruments. The event is now called the Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Concerto Competition for Piano and Strings.
The 2009-2010 competition will be held on February 13, 2010 at the Center for the Arts and the University of New Mexico. Admission is always free and open to the public. A reception, hosted by the Guild, follows the award ceremony.
The competition is open to New Mexico high school students in grades 9 - 12. An application for the competition is available from music teachers throughout New Mexico, or click here for the 2010 application. Deadline for applications is January 4, 2010.
The first place winner in each division will receive a cash award of $500 plus a performance opportunity with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Second and third place winners in each division also receive cash awards.

Concerts for Young People
Fourth graders are treated to curriculum-based concert programs present by the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra each autumn in conjunction with Albuquerque Public Schools. Fifth graders attend each spring.
Instruments are introduced and entertaining information is presented by a narrator. There is always an interactive component so students can participate with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. There are two concerts per day, and approximately 20,000 children from Albuquerque Public Schools and private schools in Albuquerque and surrounding areas are served. Guild volunteers direct the students to the concert hall from their busses.
