Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition for Piano and Strings will be February 18, 2012.



Once again the Music Guild will bring to the stage of UNM's Keller Hall (at the Center for Fine Arts) some of the most musically talented young men and women in our state. 

This year, to accommodate the comfort level of many students, we are welcoming solo performances of the sonata genre which will feature the first prize winner in a solo performance without orchestral accompaniment.
 In 1992, the New Mexico Symphony Guild established an annual competition for young musicians in New Mexico. The competition now carries the name of Jackie McGehee, a long-time NMSG member and past president, who spearheaded and underwrote the event to get it started and continues to underwrite the program. It is considered one of the premier competitions in the state. This competition provides monetary awards for the winners, as well as an opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra--the newly-created (2011) New Mexico Philharmonic.


In 2009, the Guild achieved a long-term goal of expanding the competition to include string instruments. The event is now called the Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition for Piano and Strings.

 

The competition is open to New Mexico high school students in grades 9 - 12. An application for the competition is available from music teachers throughout New Mexico. The 2011-2012 application will be available on the website by Summer, 2011.

 

This year the Guild hopes to feature master classes with the distinguished piano and string judges. 


The first place winner in each division will receive a cash award plus an opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra. Second and third place winners also receive cash awards.

Young Artists' Competition

Many talented piano and string students will be at the Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition for Piano and Strings, February 18, 2012 at Keller Hall on the UNM campus. This is one of the premier competitions in the state.  This year, we are pleased to announce a few additions to the competition.  We have a new category for solo performance which will feature the first place winner in a solo recital and the first place winner in the concerto category will have the opportunity to perform with the newly formed New Mexico Philharmonic.  In addition, there is an increase in monetary awards for the all winners in both categories.

Saturday, February 12, 2011, in the Center for Arts at the University of New Mexico, nine candidates

performed in the 2011

Jackie McGehee Young Artists' Competition - five pianists and four strings. All the young musicians delivered outstanding performances. 

First place Piano Award went to Joshua Rupley, a home-schooled senior from Albuquerque. Joshua played Totentanz in D minor, op. S.126 by Franz Liszt.  First place String Award went to Laura Steiner, who played Walton's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra in A minor, I. Andante comodo. Laura is also an Albuquerque home-schooled senior. Both Joshua and Laura play with the Albuquerque Youth Symphony www.aysmusic.org. 

 

Both musicians received a cash award of $750 and a performance opportunity with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra at the May 8, 2011, Mother's Day concert at the Rio Grande Zoo. The concert is free to the public with admission to the zoo.
